Initially Facebook was designed so that friends could communicate together, build a community, share photos, stories and keep upto date with what their friends were doing. Google Plus (+1)
A little similar to Facebook and BranchOut but run by Google and probably more feature rich. With Google+ you can also create your personal and business profiles, communicate with friends and work colleagues and also gain exposure through sharing your profile which can lead to more contacts and possible business leads.
Google+ uses "circles" which means that you can categorise your contacts into groups of "friends", "work associates" etc and you can share different content with each group. Google + also has spontaneous video chat to strike up conversations with as many as nine people at once.

Similar to a blog, Twitter is an information network that connects you to the latest stories, ideas, opinions and news about what you find interesting. Once you have an account you can create your own content for others to read or you can follow other news and stories posted by other people. A blog is a personal journal published on the World Wide Web consisting of entries ("posts") typically displayed in reverse chronological order so the most recent post appears first. Blogs are usually the work of a single individual, and often are themed on a single subject.
Although not essential most good quality blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments which keeps the content fresh which attract search engines such as Google.
In that sense, blogging can be seen as a form of social networking. Indeed, bloggers do not only produce content to post on their blogs but also build social relationships with their readers and other bloggers.
